Keep King Edward Park Green

King Edward Memorial Park is a public open space in Shadwell, on the northern bank of the River Themes. It was opened in 1922 in memory of King Edward VII With an area of 3.3 hectares; it is the 11th largest park in Tower Hamlets. This Park is dedicated to the use and enjoyment of the people of East London .The Park proved to be a huge asset to the community.

Despite over 5,000 signatures against the proposed 'Super Sewer' route at the King Edward VII Memorial Park in Wapping, Thames Water has made it clear they intend to build on the site. Plans still look like going ahead for a 45ft-high ventilation shaft on the riverbank in front of the park a mile east of Tower Bridge, which would leave permanent ‘legacy’, which would spoil the area.

I have both fought to get the petition signed and get technical reports to the Mayors attention. The plans as they stand are not acceptable. Speaking as a Tower Hamlets resident who knows about the lack of green space in the area and also as a supporter of the tunnel, Thames Water should recognise the strength of local feeling and change their plans.

We now have the support of the Mayor, Tower Hamlets Council and insist the Thames Water follows the recommendations set out in the letter from Boris and the GLA.
