Blackfriars Bridge

More cyclists use Blackfriars Bridge than any other bridge over the River Thames. As a result the safety of cyclists and the prevention of accidents need to be a top priority, on this bridge more than any other.

The junction outside Blackfriars station is currently being re-developed as part of the station reconstruction for Thameslink, which will bring far more pedestrians into the area. The original TfL plans for the junction would have left cyclists in a very bad position. Following pressure by cycling groups in conjunction with all the parties at City Hall we have managed to get a better layout for the junction.

Unfortunately we have been unable to secure a 20MPH speed limit for the area. There is a temporary 20MPH speed limit due to the works currently being undertaken and cyclists wanted to see this continue.

However, TfL believe that a 20MPH limit is not necessary on this junction. They have also said that the police will not enforce a 20MPH zone, unless the area has a large number of accidents, which Blackfriars does not.

So a partial success, but TfL have promised to provide traffic flow data to the Assembly so we can keep an eye on the situation and take action should a 20MOPH speed limit become necessary.
